Dune, Frank Herbert

I’ve no idea how Dune managed to pass me by when it first came out (she admits, showing her advancing years), but better late than never. I’ve usually read the book before I’ve seen the film, but in this too, Dune is an anomaly, the family having made two pilgrimages to the iMax in London to watch both films in the most immersive, gigantic space possible before I’d even picked up the book. And with the epic cinematography involved, they were definitely trips worth making.

I thought the films were very true to the book, although without the detail that would have been impossible to incorporate without turning each film into a much longer marathon of viewing than they already were. The characterisation was spot on, and set pieces brilliantly executed.

So this is a bit of a dual review, because I can’t separate the films from the book to be honest. And they work really well together on the page, the screen and in my imagination.
