To script or not to script, that is today’s question.
Some messages have to land with pinpoint accuracy. But there are other times where my advice is to ditch the autocue and throw away the script.
If the circumstances and the audience are right, speak from the heart.
Let me tell you a story about a leader who found presenting without supporting materials took them way, way, WAY out of their comfort zone.
One day, I was supporting this leader with a presentation to a large, international audience. She wanted to share a really inspiring story with the group and asked me what slides and script we’d need put together.
Reader, my instinct was not to use either. I felt strongly that a script or deck would dilute the power of the story, preventing it from unleashing the power and potential it possessed to create a strong connection with the audience.
To her credit, she took my advice, stepped out of her comfort zone and did away with slides and script.
As we stood together at the side of the stage while she waited to go on, the nerves started to kick in. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.” She sighed through gritted teeth.
Too late to back out now, so onto that stage she walked. Slide free. Script free. Very nervous.
Well, that story brought the house down to deafening applause. And right at the back of the room, her manager got to her feet wearing a broad grin, looked her in the eye and gave a proud fist punch to the ceiling.
It was a magical moment.
It’s not always possible, but if you see a window of opportunity to fly solo, be brave!
