It’s been a while since I really got stuck into a book, until The Binding came along and I got swept away with it. The premise is unusual and clever; that you can bind people’s memories into a book so they don’t have to carry them.
I liked the differentiation between a novel, which was seen as very much the poor relation, and the bound book. Interesting to explore how the human psyche would exploit such an ability, and in this story they very much did exactly that.
Sometimes the writing was a bit clunky, and it took a while to get going. There were a few loose ends, but not enough to frustrate. I couldn’t work out if it was a gothic or a romance novel, so I’ll go with a bit of both, and that worked for me!
